You might think naturalism just means to act natural on stage. It’s not. Naturalism is the art of being so immersed in a character, really feeling and thinking like that character should, that all of your actions, movements and dialogues come across to the audience as completely natural in a way that they truly believe the character is real. There are many ways to go about doing this, such as the Farmers Market exercise, where you watch a person’s actions and movements so intently that you start mimicking them; this is a great way to open your mind to fall completely into the role of a character. Another way is to use the “As if” concept, or the “Magic if” as it will probably be known in your acting school. This is the act of being so into a role that it’s as if you really are that character. It’s a very important aspect of acting that should be learnt, practised and revised constantly by actors so as to convey complete naturalism on stage.
