ULIPs are Unit Linked Insurance Plans. They are in investment instrument, where you can get normal insurance benefits as well as the growth aspect of stock investment. At least, that’s what they are intended to do. But unfortunately, you don’t get to hear the problems of the ULIP investment from your sales agent.
Of course, they have the same issues that any equity related instrument will have, i.e. no guarantee of assured returns. Normally, insurance is considered to be a safe investment, but ULIPs are definitely not a safe investment.
Unfortunately, the sales agents that you normally see in India can promise a moon, because at the end of the day, they are worried about their sales targets, and not your investment targets. So they will easily make tall claims like “doubling your money every 4 years” for next 15 years!
There are several other problems with ULIPs. Normally, the “managements charges” that you pay to the insurance company in first 3-4 years of ULIP are very high. Sometimes above 5% of your investment! So they are only suitable if you consistently want to invest in market through them for 15 years or so, and want to club your equity investment with insurance. But many people get nervous during market bear cycles and withdraw their money within first 2-3 years of the scheme. They pay a very heave price for that investment.
Basically, mutual funds are a much simpler option, if you want to buy and sell according to market cycle. They have a clearly defined exit load (typically 0.5% or 1% if you sell within 1 year, depending upon scheme type), and no fat fines if you discontinue your investment.
Personally, I would advise a simpler strategy of keeping your insurance, equity and debt investments separate. You can buy a simple term insurance plan for insurance needs, 2-3 simple equity funds (large cap + mid cap combo) and simple bank FDs or postal RDs for your safe investments aka debt investments. That way, you have much more control over your portfolio. You can focus more on stock investment in early stages of your career, and slowly reduce equity exposure as you grow older and put that money in debt.
